Photographing the Northern Slope Sanctuary with David Lauer
Gettliffe Architecture has had the pleasure of collaborating with architectural photographer David Lauer on several projects. Most recently, David reunited with Dominique in Salida, Colorado, for a photo session of the “Northern Slope Sanctuary.”
Dominique notes that David always wants to hear “the story” behind the architectural design of the project. This narrative guides the photo shoot. Each photo’s angle serves as an opportunity for collaboration, revealing the intentions of the design.
The Northern Slope Sanctuary was custom-designed and built for a couple ready to take a step back from demanding careers in an urban environment. They were seeking a home that felt peaceful, comforting, and integrated into nature. David is able to communicate these qualities in images that feel authentic, light, and “lived in” – impeccable without being too rigid.
The opportune participation of the homeowners themselves, and their more-than-willing Australian shepherd, contributes to that sense of authenticity and lightness of spirit. The family’s intimate relationship to the space resonates in the photographs.
Engaged in this way, the group approached each new frame with open dialogue, David offering focused direction as-needed. In the photograph of the master bath, there is some physical evidence of this improvisational approach in the form of a tree branch. Dominique picked up a broken tree branch from the grounds outside, and placed it in the shot. Outside the window is a mountainside of evergreen trees – inside, this branch reflects in the bathroom mirror, adding layers to the image and literally bringing “the outside in.”
You can read more about the Northern Slope Sanctuary, including the various green building techniques that were incorporated into the design, on our project page. We hope you enjoy David Lauer’s playful photos of the home as much as we do.
