Mountain Home | Boulder, Colorado

The clients wanted to experience a direct and open connection to the natural beauty of their mountain site. The project features seamless transitions between interior living areas and the natural surroundings from every level of the home. Located on a steep slope in the foothills west of Boulder, the design emphasizes views of the distant mountains and nearby trees and rocks to create an inspiring connection with the nature surrounding the home.

  • A walk-out deck, patio, bridge and stairs lead directly into the natural setting surrounding the home, connecting indoor and outdoor spaces throughout the structure.
  • The home features a handcrafted timber joinery and glass entry tower, which provides panoramic views on three sides. Inspired by Japanese wood joinery craftsmanship, the two-story structure was built off site (without the use of steel connectors) and craned into place. The tower creates a distinctive entrance and calls attention to the home’s surroundings upon entering.
  • A three story stone fireplace at the heart of the home creates a sense of warmth and grounding, and anchors the various functions of the structure.
  • Wood ceilings and floors complement copper library walls to offer warm contrast to expansive glass surfaces and create a continuum between the interior and exterior.
  • Framed to direct the gaze uphill, the stairs to the master bedroom highlight the slope of the site directly to the west of the home.

The project integrates expert craftsmanship to achieve harmony between natural surroundings and inviting interior spaces.
