Boulder Home Addition

In Construction, Design, Lifestyle / Light, Sustainable Design

This new addition for a Mom and her daughter aimed to better connect the existing home to their large backyard and the expansive views of the back range peaks.  A mature Ash tree gave us the opportunity and inspiration to direct the concept and enfold the new addition around the tree.  This positioning allows for seasonal shade from the Ash tree on the home’s south face, and creates a wonderful outdoor space close to the house.

Our programmatic goal was to increase the size of the kitchen, and to add a formal dining room, living room, mudroom, laundry, and ¾ bath – as well as a play/guest loft overlooking the living room space. Mimicking the original split-level design of the home, the addition both climbs up to the new loft and steps down to the backyard. Additionally, a far eastern influence and inspiration is reflected in the double doors that open to the backyard at grade, bamboo floors, wood-burning stove, stone tile, and emphasized picture windows with open views of the mountains and garden.

Several choices were made to achieve the highest standards of energy efficiency and indoor air quality. The home’s envelope is insulated with 2” of closed cell spray foam to the exterior and finished with cellulose fill, and Aplen 525 S series fiberglass windows. A new ERV (Energy Recovery Ventilation) system was installed, and the home’s finishes are solvent free, formaldehyde free, and low VOC. Additionally, water wise fixtures were installed to limit water waste.

Our team at Gettliffe Architecture collaborated with our clients and the builder, Andy Jennings of Autumn Fine Building, to create a space that is both playful and sophisticated. Thanks to all who helped make this transformational space a reality.
